Many leonberger dogs have protective instincts toward strangers. The leonberger dogs needs extensive exposure to friendly people so that the leonberger dog learns to recognize the normal behaviors of “good guys.”

Then the leonberger dog can recognize the difference when someone acts abnormally. Without careful socialization, leonberger dogs may be suspicious of everyone, which could lead to biting.
