The schnauzer contains three breeds: the actual giant schnauzer, standard schnauzer , in addition to miniature. Toy and teacup are certainly not breeds of schnauzer, but these common terms are used to market small or ill-bred miniature schnauzers.
The original schnauzer was on the same size for the reason that modern Standard Schnauzer reproduce, and was bred like a rat catcher, garden dog, and safeguard dog. The Miniature Schnauzer is the effect of crossing the initial schnauzer with breeds like the poodle and the actual affenpinscher.
